Homecoming Week 2018

Seahawk spirit will be on full display next week, Oct. 22-27, as South Lakes celebrates Homecoming Spirit Week. During spirit week, students should dress up. Each day is music-related, in keeping with the “HoCoachella” Homecoming theme. Participation will be counted each morning and will count toward winning the class spirit stick on Friday.
Spirit Court: Nominations will be going on all week for Homecoming Spirit Court, based on students’ participation in spirit week. Two finalists per grade will be decided on Thursday and will be presented at the pep rally in their class color outfits. Voting will take place at the pep rally using cell phones and a Google form link. One Spirit Ruler will be announced at the pep rally and presented at half time of the game on Friday.
Powder-puff: The annual showdown between the junior and senior girls flag football game will take place on Tuesday, October 23rd starting at 7:00pm at the stadium.
Service project: During Homecoming festivities Leadership class also will be fundraising for the Hungry for Music organization which purchases instruments for children who cannot buy their own. The goal is to raise $1,000 to purchase and ship 20 instruments to an after-school program.
Look for tables and collection baskets at the Homecoming activities throughout the week including Volley-boys on Wednesday, Powder-puff on Tuesday, and the football game on Friday.
Parade: The annual parade will begin at Hunters Woods Shopping Center at 5:00, proceed North on Colts Neck Drive, turn East onto South Lakes Drive, and finish at South Lakes High School around 6:00. feature student organizations, class councils, school clubs, sports teams, administrators, community groups, elementary schools, and the highly-regarded SLHS Marching Band, The Spirit of Reston. Student-built floats will reflect the theme, with each grade selecting a genre of music: seniors have disco, juniors have rock, sophomores have pop, and freshmen have country. The grand marshal this year is SLHS teacher Chris Moorhead.
Food Court: During and after the parade, a mini food court will be set up in the stadium-side parking lot featuring a variety of food trucks beginning at 4:30 until 6:30pm.
Dance: Class of 2019 and Leadership are collaborating on the Homecoming Dance this year, which has HoCoachella as its theme. A number of special features this year will make a unique experience, including food trucks, outdoor fire pits for making s’mores, and a student art gallery. The cost for the dance is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
Food trucks – Little Miss Whoopie Pie (Desserts), The Big Cheese (Grilled cheese sandwiches). Students will need extra money if they plan to purchase food from the food trucks.
Students have a chance to win free tickets to see the pop band “PrettyMuch” in concert at the Fillmore in Silver Spring on November 5th. Five tickets will be awarded at 10:00pm and students must be present to win.
